PROGRAM AREA ONE: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF PEACE

THE FORD FOUNDATION SHOULD SUPPORT ACTIVITIES THAT PROMISE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO WORLD PEACE AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WORLD ORDER OF LAW AND JUSTICE.

The Foundation should support activities directed toward:

  • The mitigation of tensions which now threaten world peace.

  • The development among the peoples of the world of the understanding and conditions essential to permanent peace.

  • The improvement and strengthening of the United Nations and its associated international agencies.

  • The improvement of the structure and procedures by which the United States Government, and private groups in the United States, participate in world affairs.

In the opinion of the Committee and its advisers the transcendent importance of preventing war and preserving peace requires that The Ford Foundation support immediate efforts toward this end.

The Committee's earnest desire to discover ways to minimize the probability of war is balanced by the sober realization that effective action toward this end is extremely difficult. The primary responsibility for coping with the problems of war rests in the hands of national governments and the United Nations. In no way can a private foundation take an official part in diplomacy or international affairs. Nor is the Committee
